More rains hit Pakistan as aid agencies boost relief efforts
Heavy downpours worsened massive flooding in Pakistan on Sunday as aid agencies increased relief efforts to help the about 12 million people affected in much of the country.
The flooding, which started in the northwest, threatened places as far south as the port city of Karachi.
Pakistan's Meteorological Department said more heavy rains were in store in the next few days, threatening to deepen the worst natural disaster the nation has experienced in recent history. And the monsoon season is only halfway over.Parts of the Swat Valley remain inaccessible by road; helicopters provide the only way in or out for people, food, clean water and medicine. Bad weather hampered the flights Saturday.
Meanwhile, victims accused the government of lack of action. They criticized President Asif Ali Zardari, who was in England for talks with British Prime Minister David Cameron during the worst of the crisis.
"We elected him," a resident of the flooded town of Chachran Sharif said. "Where is he?"
U.S. emergency relief teams continued to arrive in Peshawar to help, the U.S. State Department said.
In all, the U.S. Agency for International Development has committed $35 million in aid to international organizations and nongovernmental organizations

Ireland to reopen airports, fears ash cloud return
DUBLIN (Reuters) – The Irish Aviation Authority said it would allow flights to resume from all Irish airports from 1200 GMT on Tuesday but volcanic ash could bring more disruptions later in the week and periodically throughout the summer.
The IAA had closed airports from 0600 GMT until 1200 GMT due to risk of ash ingestion in aircraft engines, although overflights of Ireland from Britain and continental Europe had not been banned.
"The situation will be reviewed as the week goes on," the IAA said in a statement on Tuesday.
Continued northerly winds forecast for the coming days could bring more clouds of volcanic ash from an Icelandic eruption and disruption for passengers this week, it said.

8.8-magnitude earthquake hits central Chile
SANTIAGO, Chile – A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck Chile early Saturday, collapsing buildings, killing at least 16 people and downing phone lines. President Michele Bachelet declared a "state of catastrophe" in central Chile and said the death toll was rising.
Tsunami warnings were issued over a wide area, including Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Antarctica and Australia.
"We have had a huge earthquake, with some aftershocks," Bachelet said, appealing from an emergency response center for Chileans to remain calm. "Despite this, the system is functioning. People should remain calm. We're doing everything we can with all the forces we have. Any information we will share immediately."
